Agroforestry

Agroforestry is the deliberate planting of trees on agricultural lands that consist of more than one crop.

On our farm, we have approximately 6 hectares of a mixed nut/fruit tree alley cropping system with interplanted timber and shelterwood crops.
Nut species: Castanea sativa, Juglans regia, J.nigra, J.ailantofolia, J.cordiformis, Corylus avellana, C. colurna, C. americana

In the forest, we are creating the EDIBLE LANDSCAPE, an environment where edible plants grow in natural conditions. We are constantly planting edible species in the woodland to get the food everywhere, mostly along walking paths.

Syntropic agroforestry trials

We started to experiment with syntropic agroforestry systems on our farm a while ago..

  • In 2023 we planted Black alder (Alnus glutinosa) as a shelterwood and nitrogen fixer for young nut trees. It seems to work quite well. The next step will be to start forming alders in form of umbrella to get some frost protection.
  • In autumn 2025, we started to experiment with willows as shelterwood and chop&drop trees. We use local species Salix alba, S. viminalis, S caprea, S. fraagilis. and Sambucus nigra.
