Taxus baccata conservation
In Latvia, yew is a protected specie with around 400-500 adult trees left and poor regeneration due to deer, a big distance between male and female trees, and forest overexploitation. State institutions do nothing and have no hope for the near future.
There we are a part of a project, providing our knowledge and expertise in tree propagation and forest care..
We got permission to work in two near nature protection areas, to propagate yews and then plant them back. Now cuttings are growing in the greenhouse.
Also, we have made a pretty good inventory of yews there with a georeferenced map of trees. Describe genders and baby yew regeneration.
Today, we are applying for light opening around adult yews (for better seed production) and fencing baby yews, in the same area.
The next step will be to write documentation to extend the same protected area outward, where there is good regeneration.
